One of the first things I began to realize about my dad’s job as a truck was that he was gone a lot! I can’t remember a trip being less than a month long. Several reasons behind the longs trips which I began to see as I got older. Back in the early days of my dad’s driving career, trucks did not run like you see them running today. Traveling across country took a week or more with limited accommodations for the trucker. Trucks had very little comfort, causing drivers to stop more frequently to rest. There were actually very few and far between places for truckers to park, fuel and eat, so they usually took advantage when they finally got to a place that could provide all those accommodations. Back then , they were true truck stops. Nothing like the elaborate Travel Stops you see today. This journey is going to make a lot of comparisons between yesterday and today, and that is pretty much my focus of talking about the early days that I remember growing up vs. what I’m seeing today.
